Academic WorldQuest 2012
WorldQuest is a team trivia game testing competitor’s knowledge of international affairs, geography, history, & culture with questions on current events and fun facts. It is a flagship program of the World Affairs Councils of America now widely played at the adult and high school levels around the country. See Visit Academic Worldquest Website .

Academic WorldQuest 2012 for the Palm Beaches: This year's local competition in the Palm Beaches was held at Lynn University Green Center in Boca Raton on Saturday, February 18th from 2:30 to 6:00 PM.

Last Year’s 2011 Competition: On February 26, 2011, Saint Edwards School of Vero Beach again won the local competition beating out high school teams. Alexander Dreyfoos School of the Arts from West Palm Beach placed second and Olympic Heights from Boca Raton placed third. Saint Edwards represented our Council in the National contest in Washington D.C. in April, 2011 against 50 teams from across the United States.

How is the game played: The game is a contest between 4-8 person high school teams. Teams compete by answering rounds of questions testing knowledge of current affairs, world leaders, geography, recent history, flags, international organizations, countries, regions, the world economy, culture and religion.

The WACA National web site includes specific information for preparation including topics, past year questions, etc. The New York Times is the source for current event and many other topic questions. The internet is also a good source of information for all the topics.

The cost for a local high school team to participate will be $250. The World Affairs Council of the Florida Palm Beaches will then cover the costs of the local competition and pay a stipend towards the cost for the local team winner (4 students & 1 chaperone) for the airline flights and hotel costs in Washington D.C. National sponsorship funds cover the event costs in Washington including the competition, facilities, breakfasts and dinners, tours, prizes, and buses.

How to Get into the Competition? High school sponsors should complete and send the final pledge of participation in Academic WorldQuest 2012 to the Council School Outreach Program Director by January 15, 2012.

Contacts for Information: Celeste Simon, Executive Director, 561-236-1825 celeste@worldaffairsflorida.org Website: www.worldaffairsflorida.org

WAC Dialogue
Dialogue: “Interchange and discussion of ideas, especially when open and frank, as in seeking mutual understanding or harmony.”
Webster’s Dictionary

The World Affairs Council is pleased to announce that member Rick Rhodes, of Raymiond James Financial Services, has agreed to chair and organize the 2011-2012 Dialogue program.

Through these Saturday morning dialogue sessions, we hope to not only engage each other but to gain a better understanding of some of today’s most pressing issues.

The first meeting of Dialogue took place 930-1130 AM Saturday, December 10, at Palm Healthcare Molly Wilmot Pavilion. The topic was "How U.S. Press Differs From Foreign Press" with Stewart Kampel, former editor of the New York Times.

Notices are posted and emailed as plans for additional sessions are finalized.

As before, we encourage you to become engaged with your ideas and volunteer to lead a discussion.
