Speaker's Remarks:
Director General Abraham Chu discussed the challenges Taiwan faces with the One China Policy stated by the Peoples Republic of China (Mainland China) and the United States. He talked about Taiwan's bid to join the World Trade Organization and World Health Organization and the problems faced by this budding democracy and economic power. He challenged the Council members to support Taiwan’s efforts in establishing and nurturing their new born democracy. He noted that Taiwan is the only one of the three economic Tigers of the Far East, Singapore, Mainland China, and Taiwan, experimenting and advancing democracy. The people of Taiwan will need courage and persistence and the support of others in their efforts, given the constraints imposed by the One China Policy espoused by Mainland China and accepted by the United States. He implored Mainland China to consider the aspirations of the Taiwanese to strive for democracy, peace, prosperity, and progress.

Speaker's Biography:
Abraham Chu was appointed Director-General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Miami in November 2003. He represents Taiwan in Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Bermuda and the British Turks and Caicos Islands.
Abraham Chu began his foreign service as Junior Policy Analyst of the Department of North American Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) from 1983-88. He later served from 1988-90 as Trade Advisor for the East Asia Trade Centre in New Zealand and from 1990-94 as Secretary of the TECO.
In 1994, Abraham Chu was recalled to Taiwan and promoted to Executive Secretary of the Congressional Liaison Office, MOFA. Before moving to Florida to head TECO in Miami, he served as Director-General of the Taipei Representative Office in the UK, Edinburgh Office, Scotland, from 2000-04.
Abraham Chu was born in Hsinchu, Taiwan on February 10, 1958, and was educated at National Taiwan University, where he received a LL.B in Political Science. He married Milly in 1987, and has two sons, Kevin and Lawrence. He enjoys travel and has visited 68 countries so far. His other hobbies include photography, arts and museums, computers and technology, as well as reading.
