Defending Taiwan's Democracy
Dir. Gen. Abraham Chu
Bill & Judy Wheelock & Dir. Gen. Abraham Chu
Speaker's Remarks:   Director General Abraham Chu discussed the challenges Taiwan faces with the One China Policy stated by the Peoples Republic of China (Mainland China) and the United States. He talked about Taiwan's bid to join the World Trade Organization and World Health Organization and the problems faced by this budding democracy and economic power. He challenged the Council members to support Taiwan’s efforts in establishing and nurturing their new born democracy. He noted that Taiwan is the only one of the three economic Tigers of the Far East, Singapore, Mainland China, and Taiwan, experimenting and advancing democracy. The people of Taiwan will need courage and persistence and the support of others in their efforts, given the constraints imposed by the One China Policy espoused by Mainland China and accepted by the United States. He implored Mainland China to consider the aspirations of the Taiwanese to strive for democracy, peace, prosperity, and progress.
