Academic WorldQuest

Academic WorldQuest (AWQ) is a fun, fast-paced annual competition for high school teams to test their collective knowledge of international facts and issues.

This year’s local competition for the World Affairs Council of the Florida Palm Beaches (WACFPB) will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2010.  The national competition will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010.

Who can participate?

Both public and private schools in Southeast Florida are eligible to participate.

AWQ is a team competition.  Teams for the local contest consist of four to eight high school students from the same school.   Teams for the national competition consist of four members.  Teams compete by answering rounds of questions testing their knowledge of world affairs.

There is no charge for high schools that are members of the WACFPB at the Benefactor level or higher.  For other high schools, there is a modest fee of $250 per school per team for non-member school teams.

The local AWQ competition will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2010, in the 2nd floor conference Room of Northern Trust Bank at 770 East Atlantic Avenue in downtown Delray Beach.  It will last from 2:00 p.m. until approximately 5:30 p.m.

How does a team register to participate?

St. Edwards School of Vero Beach, Fla., participated in the 2009 competition hosted by the World Affairs Council of the Florida Palm Beaches.

High school sponsors must register to participate in AWQ 2010 and send their $250 registration fees, if the school is not a member of WACFPB, to the Council’s Schools Director no later than Friday, January 15, 2010.  Contact information can be found below.

Registration information may be made by email and must include:

·         School name and address

·         Teacher Sponsor name, email and contact telephone number

However, a non-member school’s team will not be allowed to participate if the registration fee is not received by Friday, January 30, 2010.  The address to submit the payment can be found below.

History of Academic WorldQuest

The Academic WorldQuest program is a Flagship Program of the world affairs council system.  The contest was invented by the Charlotte Council and now is widely played at the adult and high school levels around the nation.  The team game tests the competitors’ knowledge of international affairs, current events, the global economy, geography, world history and culture.  The World Affairs Councils of America started the national competition in Washington, D.C., in March 2003.  Participants come from high schools who have won local competitions sponsored by World Affairs Councils throughout the United States.
