Speaker's Biography: Born in England, resident in California, educated at Cambridge and Yale, Sir Eldon Griffiths was a correspondent and editor for Time, Life & Newsweek and speechwriter for two Prime ministers before being elected to Parliament as MP for the safe Conservative seat of Bury St Edmunds, a district that hosts 25.000 American airmen (and served as a base for US attacks on Libya and now supports both countries' operations in Afghanistan).
Knighted by the Queen in 1986, Sir Eldon served as a UK Delegate to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and as Minister of Sport and Under Secretary of State in the world's first government Department of the Environment where he worked on nuclear power issues and the Channel Tunnel between Britain and France. Returning to America, he was elected as national Chairman of the 450.000 strong World Affairs Councils and serves as a director of US and British companies and of a Swiss bank's activities in America.
Sir Eldon is a founding Director of Chapman’s Schmid Center for International Business. In recent years he has lectured on terrorism (to which he was exposed as political adviser to the police in Northern Ireland) and on the EU's attempts to save its euro currency. His debate with the producers of The Iron Lady movie contrasts Meryl Streep's presentation of Margaret Thatcher and Sir Eldon's more intimate assessment of his former colleague and leader.
His published books include biographies of US entrepreneurs with businesses in Germany and Indonesia, and Turbulent Iran, a revealing assessment of the Islamic regime's nuclear pretensions. Sir Eldon's two volume memoirs, TransAtlantic Man and Global Citizen are replete with revealing anecdotes about his personal encounters with Indira Gandhi of India, De Gaulle of France, Gadaffi of Libya, Zhu Ronggi of China, Yeltsin and Gorbachev of Russia, as well as British leaders from Churchill to Thatcher, Blair and Cameron, and US presidents from Eisenhower and Reagan to George Bush and George W. Bush.
Regarding the Euro Currency crisis, Sir Eldon was in at the start of the European project (Treaty of Rome) and has recently had ringside seat during visits to EU, UK and Switzerland (where he now serves on board of Geneva bank that financed Napoleon!)
Sir Eldon now lives in both Laguna Niguel, California and the County of Suffolk in England.
